  When we articulate Bihar we are remembered of ancient India when Buddhism was evolving into what now is a universal religion. The word "Bihar" is a mythical rename of "Vihara" meaning Buddhist Monasteries which at one point in history were scattered all over the landscape of Bihar, around villages and cities alike.  
     
  The birthplace of Buddha, Mahavira and Guru Gobind Singh, Bihar is the home of Emperor Ashoka who preached "Ahimsa", or non-violence, and spread the message of Buddhism throughout the world.    History
     
  Since the inception of its history, which dates back to 500 years ago, Bihar has been recognized on cradle of movements in the fields of culture, religion, literature and human rights. A depiction of peace, Lord Buddha, Mahavir, Great Guru Govind Singh, Mahatma Gandhi and great Sufi Saints, bestowed this land. It is the land on which the earliest seeds of democracy took roots and blossomed into a form of governance with the advent of Lord Buddha.  
     
   Capital
     
  Patna the capital of Bihar, also known as Patliputra in history, was home to one of the greatest monarchs of the world who ruled over much of the Indian subcontinent, and extended as far as Iran and Afghanistan to the West.  
     
  Bihar is the fascinating land of great religious leaders like Gautama Buddha, Lord Mahavir and Guru Gobind Singh. It was also erstwhile the capital city of Patliputra of Emperor Ashoka.
 
     
  Beneath the din and bustle of Patna, lies a fascinating past and in each chapter of its history , it has been crowned a new name - Kusumpur, Pushpapur, Pataliputra and Azeemabad.

  Art, sculpture, festivals and fairs along with spiritual beliefs and disbeliefs, shape the cultural life of a society. Each segment captivates a symbolic place in telling the uniqueness of the people and their habits.

  The medieval period upheld the finest pieces of Afghan sculpture, but Bihar became more famous in modern times for the fine arts of Patna Kalam and Madhubani style of paintings.  
     
   Handicrafts
     
  Bihar is a mind-boggling repository of handicrafts. It houses a cornucopia of traditional crafts that enjoy universal appeal. A rich treasure of native culture as seen by the craftsman- through his colors, shapes, figures and patterns.  
     
  Miniatures in paper and leaves, stone pottery, work on bamboo, leather products, and hand paintings, are a part of the rich treasure.  
     
  Bihar's eminent art form appears in the form of Madhubani school of painting which portray mythological themes, assembling images of local deities as well as Hindu gods and goddesses.

The state has a humid subtropical monsoon climate, with three well-defined seasons:

Winter, from November to February;
Summer, from March to mid-June;
Monsoons, from mid-June through October.

Temperatures in December and January fall to 5ºC and below, while those in May rise above 40º C.

The state's mean annual rainfall is 1,270 mm.
Best time to visit is October to March.
